Gold leaf is usually something you find on picture frames and church ceilings. Here it covers a 900 mm square clock that spells out the time in words.

The front is stainless steel, covered in 24-carat gold leaf by hand. Each letter is cut through the metal and finished edge by edge, so the leaf keeps its fine, slightly uneven texture right up to the light. Each front is individually numbered by laser engraving. When the time lights up, the words glow through the gold, and a light sensor keeps them from glaring at night.

The clock is 32 mm deep and weighs about 25 kg, so it needs a solid wall and its 710 mm bracket. It runs from the mains and keeps to ±8 seconds a month.
